 Acupuncture - Ian Souch

Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health based on more than 2000 years of development and refinement in the Far East. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as Qi (Chee) - movig in a smooth and balnced way. Any trauma to mind, body or spirit can cause the floew of energy to become impeded, leading to discomfort and illness.

By inserting needles at specific points on the body, the body's own healing response can be stimulated to restore and maintain health.

Acupuncture can benefit a wide spectrum of acute and chronic illnesses as well as playing an important role in the prevention of illness.

Many come with a specific symptom or condition but the effect of good acupuncture is to do more than simply alleviate symptoms. Treatment will focus on the individual rather than the disease.

Treatment

The skill of acupuncturists lies in their ability to make a traditional diagnosis from what is often a complex pattern of disharmony. An initial comprehensive assessment of your health and lifestyle will take place on your first visit and will take 1 1/2 to 2 hours and will include pulse and tongue diagnosis which are unique tools to Chinese Medicine.

A treatment plan is then devised. Treatments thereafter are approximately 45 minutes.

The Needles

Acupuncture is a safe treatment for all. The insertion of sterile disposable needles creates a sensation such as tingling or drawing but bears little resemblance to hypodermic needles.

Some needles may be left in for 20 minutes or others withdrawn immediately. Sometimes a warming herb called moxa may be applied to an area. Generally people find it a relaxing experience. As well as improvement in specific symptoms, most people report a boost in their energy levels, improved sleep and general ability to cope better.

Number of treatments

This depends on each individual. Most people will be treated weekly until the symptoms have improved, before treatments are spaced out. Some patients then come as a preventative measure to strengthen their constitution or prevent the return of symptoms.
